“One of the greatest parts of PoET are the student lunches, where we take turns sharing our research and offering feedback to each other. It is rewarding that our diverse group of engineers, social scientists, and historians can learn each other's "languages" and offer meaningful feedback on each other's research.

My collaboration with Kieran and Roe on the history of the automobile has helped me realize the importance of storytelling in case study research. It has also prompted me to further investigate the history of emission regulation and see patterns in decision-making. I have incorporated my findings in my thesis-writing.” Christine Ng, IGERT Trainee, Political Science

IGERT Requirements

IGERT students are expected to take the following three courses. Some of these courses are already required under each PhD program. Typically this requirement adds one or two courses to your coursework requirements for the ESD TMP track, STS, or Political Science PhD.

    >

Science, Technology and Public Policy (17.310J /ESD.103J/ STS.482J)
Professor Kenneth Oye
(Fall)

    > Integrating Doctoral Seminar on Emerging Technologies (ESD.85)
Professors Dava Newman, Larry McCray
, and Rebecca Dodder (Fall)
    >

Social and Political Implications of Technology (STS.462)
Professor Merritt Roe Smith (Spring)

Finally, you will need to demonstrate technical knowledge appropriate to your dissertation topic (e.g., technical courses in nanotechnology sufficient to develop expertise) Satisfaction of this requirement will be determined by your advisor in consultation with the IGERT Co-directors.

  2.

Research:
As an IGERT Trainee, you will perform research tasks in support of the Multidisciplinary Faculty Panels. These panels will meet approximately once a semester, with a one-day kick-off retreat planned for late September/early October. Should you choose to begin receiving IGERT funding this summer, part of your task will include preparing for the fall kick-off panel retreat. IGERT Trainees will work with Panel members before and after the meetings in order to craft and initiate work on research questions. Specific research assignments will be made by your advisor in consultation with the IGERT Co-PIs.

  3.
Other:
IGERT Trainees organize a seminar series during the academic year. Please note that this is distinct from the IGERT Doctoral Seminar, which is run by faculty. These events may feature a single speaker or a panel discussion or IGERT student presentations, and may be opened to the public. The students will be responsible for identifying topics and speakers and for scheduling. PoET advisors will assist trainees by providing suggestions and contact information for potential speakers.

The IGERT program will cover conference costs and travel expenses of IGERT Trainees to professional conferences. Trainees are expected to attend at least one professional conference during each year of IGERT funding. (Please see below for information about travel funding.)

IGERT Trainees are expected to work with the PIs in providing feedback, information, and any written products needed to fulfill NSF reporting requirements.

Opportunities Offered by the IGERT program
  >
All IGERT doctoral trainees hold IGERT-supported Research Assistant (RA) traineeships. As an IGERT Trainee, you will further the research agenda of Multidisciplinary Faculty Panels. This work will provide a context in which to focus the formulation of your thesis research, introducing you to IGERT research questions and engaging you in a teamwork environment. You will gain experience in research tasksÑsuch as literature reviewsÑand work with faculty who might become part of your thesis committee.

  >
As an IGERT Trainee, you will have a unique opportunity to foster professional relationships with faculty and students in different disciplines and programs.

  >
You will be provided both formal and informal career development opportunities.

  >
Advisory Committee members will expose you to the way in which the business and politics of science and technology are conducted outside of academia, and can help position you for placement within companies and other interested organizations after completion of your degree.

Career Paths

As a graduates of the IGERT program, you will be prepared for work in industry (e.g. biotechnology firms), consulting, government agencies (OSTP, FDA, NAE) or think tanks (Brookings Institution), NGOs (Environmental Defense, Union of Concerned Scientists), and academia (policy or business schools, programs such as STS and ESD). We expect our IGERT graduates to be sought out by employers that value the ability to transcend a purely technical perspective. Our graduates will excel in positions that call for making decisions and formulating strategies in the face of uncertainty, and in light of social, environmental, and ethical issues. These skills will be particularly valuable in areas of rapid technological advancement, positioning IGERT graduates to fill critical analytic or decision-making positions.

The active participation of government, business, and NGOs is an integral feature of this project. Senior staff from the Departments of State and Defense, the EPA, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Goldman Sachs, Ford Motor Company, AFL-CIO, and Environmental Defense, as well as working journalists, have expressed interest in participating in panels and research groups.
