The outreach component of PoET is designed to improve the capacity of society to respond to the implications of emerging technologies. The active participation of government, business, and NGOs is an integral feature of this project, serving to check academic blindness, to enrich graduate education, and to engage the world beyond the academy. Senior staff from the Departments of State and Defense, the EPA, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Goldman Sachs, Ford Motor Company, AFL-CIO, and Environmental Defense, as well as working journalists, have expressed interest in participating in panels and research groups. Analytic methods and substantive findings will also be distributed through graduate students placements, academic publication and conferencing, and MIT Congressional Staff Seminars on science and technology issues.
